What Your Favorite Sandwich Says About Your
Personality and Love Life

by Brian Vaszily, Founder of IntenseExperiences.com

You can tell a lot about a person, including if they are right for you romantically, by the sandwich they prefer. That’s not exactly an old adage, but with this recent sandwich personality study it may become one.

So let’s start with John Montague. He was the 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), and he held various military and political offices in Britain. But today he is most known as the man who popularized the sandwich.

Myth has it that Montague, an avid gambler, preferred sandwiches because they were fast and easy meals that didn’t interfere with his gambling. It is more likely that Montague just liked the food creation in general.

Today, over 300 million of the Earl of Sandwich’s namesake are consumed daily in the United States alone.

And from the baloney slice slapped on white bread appreciated by school children and prisoners alike to the world’s most expensive sandwich, the von Essen Platinum Club Sandwich (made of Iberico ham, poulet de Bresse, white truffles, quail eggs, semi-dried Italian tomatoes and 24-hour fermented sour dough bread; head to Cliveden’s Waldo Restaurant in Berkshire, U.K. to get yours for just $197 each!), sandwiches certainly can be convenient and satisfying meals.

But the recent study conducted by Dr. Alan Hirsch of the Chicago-based Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation shows that the sandwiches you prefer can say a lot about your personality and even the romantic partners for which you are best suited.

Best Foods and Hellmans commissioned the research, in case you are wondering as I did who would pay for such a thing. (While the sandwiches chosen for the study are all very popular, you’ll notice a typical ingredient in all of them is mayonnaise; no peanut butter and jelly sandwiches here!)

For the study, the nearly 3000 participants underwent standardized comprehensive psychiatric and personality tests to identify their character traits and behaviors. By comparing the personality test results and survey responses, the study revealed a strong correlation between sandwich choices and personality traits.

What’s Your Favorite?

Below are the sandwiches and the personality types who strongly tend to prefer them, as well as the other sandwich types they are most compatible with.

BEFORE reading the descriptions, scan this list and note which you most prefer, and then see how valid this study is for you personally. (As for me, I love egg salad sandwiches and bacon lettuce and tomato sandwiches equally; this study may be on to something indeed!)

The Club: Individuals who prefer the Club sandwich are often agreeable and unselfish. Club sandwich eaters are reliable and strongly devoted to work as well as relationships. The best words to describe those who prefer the club sandwich: committed and loyal. Club sandwich fans are most compatible with those who chose Club, BLT, or turkey.

Ham and Cheese: Ham and cheese sandwich lovers are curious and have a wide range of interests. They are most productive and creative when working alone without direct supervision. The best words to describe those who prefer the ham and cheese sandwich: thoughtful and inquisitive. Ham and cheese sandwich lovers are often independent without strong romantic ties.

Turkey: Those who prefer the turkey sandwich are free-thinkers. They function best when given space at work and in relationships. The best words to describe those who prefer the turkey sandwich: creative and rebellious. Turkey sandwich lovers are often attracted to other turkey sandwich lovers.

Tuna Salad: Tuna salad sandwich eaters are generally aggressive and achievement-oriented. They are natural leaders and driven to succeed in both work and personal relationships. The best words to describe those who prefer the tuna salad sandwich: competitive and successful. They are most romantically compatible with those who prefer egg salad and others who also like tuna salad.

Egg Salad: Egg salad enthusiasts are often the center of attention. They are entertaining and crave adventure. The best words to describe those who prefer egg salad sandwich: charming and energetic. Egg salad sandwich lovers are the "universal romantic" and they are often compatible with all sandwich lovers.

Chicken Salad: Individuals that prefer the chicken salad sandwich are well-adjusted and empathic. The best words to describe those who prefer chicken salad sandwich: easy-going and understanding. They are most romantically compatible with those preferring egg salad sandwiches.

Seafood Salad: Similar to those who prefer the Club sandwich, seafood salad sandwich fans are described as agreeable and unselfish. They seek comfort in close, secure relationships. The best words to describe those who prefer seafood sandwich: committed and loyal. They are most romantically compatible with those who prefer the BLT or seafood salad sandwich.

Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato: BLT lovers are conscientious perfectionists. They are devoted in all areas of their lives: work, home and relationships. The best words to describe those who prefer the BLT sandwich: honest and full of integrity. BLT sandwich lovers are most compatible with those who prefer seafood salad sandwich.

So now try this: email your friends, family and especially your significant other or potential significant other(s) and find out which of the above sandwiches they most prefer. Then see how valid the above descriptions are, and forward this to them.

And if you are looking for love, or wondering if you belong in your current relationship, remember: the answers are in the sandwich.
