Party Toasts -- The Top Ten for Holidays and Special Occasions
Below are ten party toasts that, whether served in jest or sincerity, have been spoken (or slurred) at many a party throughout the ages. Party toasts date back to ancient times. In 6th century B.C. Greece, for example, drinking to one another's health was common in part because poisoned wine was common. Apparently poisoning wine was a popular way of eliminating one's enemies, and so the party toast was a prayer of sorts that the wine wouldn't do away with everyone present. The term "toast" itself comes from a Greek and Roman practice of dropping bread into a bowl of wine to remove its acidity. Wine back then was even worse than some of the stuff college kids drink today, and so this toasting practice was necessary. The bowl would be passed around, and the last person to drink from it would be the host, who would also eat the acid-saturated piece of toast in honor of the guests. Now that you have an interesting anecdote to share at your party or holiday event that will make you all the more interesting, too, on with the top ten party toasts!
